Hi, my name is Maddison Stoff. (she/her) :)
I'm an independent trans femme writer who's been publishing original fiction online for a long time now,
starting out on DeviantArt in the early 2000s and continuing until the present day.
I already have an industry website @thedescenters, but I wanted one that felt a little bit less formal too.
So, I designed this page to be a reimaginging of my normal web and social media presence as a late 1990s personal homepage,
including gifs taken from archived Geocities pages, and a short piece of original MIDI music I sequenced on an authentic Yamaha MU80 and a Roland SC-55 Mk2.
Most of what I write is cyberpunk-adjacent stories about trans, disabled, and non-binary characters with complex trauma
surviving (and usually thriving!) in mostly space opera or dystopian settings.
But it's really hard to pin down what a "normal" type of story is for me because I'm changing up my style and subject matter quite a lot.
My work is usually quite positive, though, choosing to focus more on microagressions and transmisogyny than the more overt oppression that we see today.
I don't shy away from that reality, of course. This isn't purely escapist fiction.
Rather I would like to write stories that feel both realistic and inspiring.
I quite like writing (fucked up!) romance too. For example, as a special thanks for visiting my page, check out this reading I did
of my 2023 short story "Love Blooms on the Battlefield" at local literary event "Healthbased" in 2024.
As you may have guessed, I also enjoy writing music, not just for my solo project, The Descenters,
but also by recording shorter instrumental tracks for friends who've paid to commision me.
Feel free to contact me via my industry website if you're interested in that.

One hobby I've maintained since early childhood is playing video games. Aesthetically and narratively,
they're highly influential on my work, especially mid 90's dos games such as One Must Fall 2097 or Traffic Department 2192.
I talk about this history in detail in my graphic novel, "Machine Translations", and my first book, "For We Are Young and Free",
but it comes up all the time throughout my stories, and affects the types of sounds I tend towards when making music too.
These days I have less time for it though, so I have a strong preference for calming games of lower difficulties,
especially if they'll also let me decorate a simulated space.
If you have the steam version of Tower Unite, you can actually visit several places that I've decorated in-game. :)
I really enjoy micro-scale detail and writing low stakes, silly dialogue. I think that's part of why I find it as relaxing as I do.
# cyberspace explorers have passed through here.
